Overview
Otoplasty (ear surgery) corrects prominent, protruding, or asymmetrical ears by reshaping the ear cartilage and repositioning the ears closer to the head. It is one of the few cosmetic procedures commonly performed on children as well as adults, delivering lasting results that significantly improve self-confidence.
How It Works
An incision is made behind the ear, in the natural crease. The ear cartilage is reshaped and/or scored to create or enhance the natural folds, and permanent sutures are placed to hold the ear in its new position. The procedure takes 1–2 hours under local anesthesia (adults) or general anesthesia (children).
What to Expect
Consultation includes assessment of ear anatomy, cartilage structure, and your goals. For children, we discuss timing and ensure the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed (typically age 5–6). Surgery is performed at our clinic or an accredited facility.
Recovery
A headband is worn for 1–2 weeks to protect the ears. Return to light activity within 1 week. Avoid contact sports for 4–6 weeks. Swelling resolves over 4–6 weeks. Final results visible at 3 months.
