Overview
Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for submental fullness — the double chin. Its active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring molecule that destroys fat cell membranes on contact. Once destroyed, those fat cells can no longer store fat, delivering permanent results without surgery.
How It Works
A series of small injections are placed in a grid pattern under the chin. Deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cell membranes, causing the cells to break down and be naturally eliminated by the body over 4–6 weeks. Most patients require 2–4 treatment sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results.
What to Expect
Consultation includes assessment of your submental fat and skin laxity. A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment. Injections take 15–20 minutes. Swelling under the chin is expected and is a sign the treatment is working.
Recovery
Swelling, bruising, and numbness under the chin are common and resolve over 2–4 weeks. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or the next day.
